The Stylist Behind Grimes’s Futuristic Look

]

For last week’s Met Gala, Grimes wore a Dune-inspired reptilian dress and carried a steel sword made from a melted down AR-15 rifle. The woman who pulled the ensemble together is a stylist named Turner, a former accessories editor at Jane magazine, who has been Grimes’s stylist for six years.

Raised in Alexandria, Va., Turner (she goes by her last name) studied graphic design at the School of Visual Arts in New York, where an instructor told her she was clearly a stylist. Although her roster includes Kim Gordon, Kesha and other musicians, her steadiest client is also her first: Grimes. They met in 2015, a few days after Turner, 40, moved to Los Angeles and a fashion editor at Nylon magazine asked if she would style Grimes for a cover. The two hit it off and have worked together ever since. Turner shared some insight in Grimes’s style.

Whose idea was the sword?

It’s always Grimes’s idea. But her manager was the person who had brought in MSCHF [the Brooklyn artist collective that designed the sword]. We also knew that bringing a sword to the Met Gala was going to be tricky. I was persistent in trying to get clearance for that sword. When I got her to the carpet, there was a security guard who said, “I’m sorry, you can’t bring that in.” And I had to say: “No, the sword must come in. It’s been cleared.”

Grimes' New “Space Opera” Album: Everything You Need To Know

]

Grimes is a visionary artist, and her highly anticipated sixth studio album is shaping up to be an exciting new era in her discography. Even back in 2018, two years before the release of her record Miss Anthropocene, Grimes was dreaming up the music, saying she was “crazy stoked” about what was to come. The singer has been dropping little bits of information regarding the forthcoming record in true Grimes fashion, often through Instagram comments, her own Discord community, or very fun TikTok videos.

“I think it is by far my greatest work that I’ve ever done,” she said in a video interview with Vogue. “I think I went into this being like ‘I’m going to sign to a major label and I’m going to be a really big artist’ and all this stuff, and in that process, I started being like ‘no’. I… literally don’t care if anyone listens to this sh*t. I just want it to be great, to be unequivocally just great art.”

The new album may not have an official title or release date, but there’s plenty to get caught up on before the new age of Grimes begins. See everything there is to know, below.

It’s a “space opera” about a lesbian AI romance

Grimes is an artist, which means she doesn’t just “make records,” she has “concepts.” Like her fifth studio album, Miss Anthropocene, which was loosely based on an “anthropomorphic goddess of climate change” inspired by Roman mythology and villainy.

Now her forthcoming record is leaving earth and heading out to the cosmos. From Grimes’ Instagram comments to your ears: “It’s a space opera about CLAIRE DE LUNE — an artificial courtesan who was implanted in a simulation that is a memory of the AI creation story on earth from the brain of the engineer who invented AI because he wants to re live his life but see if his perfect dream girl could teach him to love and thereby he would preserve humanity this time rather than let them fade into obscurity — overcome by the machines.”

She continued: “As she slowly realizes she is essentially a dancing puppet for the male gaze tho, their relationship grows complex. Simultaneously — ‘NO ONE’ (the most powerful super intelligence in the future where the simulation is being rendered from) realizes there’s a massive hyper-realistic sim running and sends in her troll AI puppets to wreak havoc.”

It’s her first record after parting ways with 4AD

Grimes joined Columbia Records in March 2021, after releasing three albums on her former label 4AD. Grimes had her fair share of issues with 4AD, once calling it a “sh*t label” on Twitter; she quickly apologized, writing, “i’m sorry negative shit i said ended up in the press today, i didn’t mean to spread bad vibes ugh.” That being said: the music industry does suck!

She’s been teasing potential singles, including “Shinigami Eyes”

During a transmission on the “Metaverse Stage” of her newly launched Discord server, Grimes teased a new song, “Shinigami Eyes,” a techno track that’s part ode to the popular anime Death Note and that time she trolled everyone into thinking she got experimental eye surgery to block out all blue light. Grimes initially hinted the song’s title with binary code — she is nothing if not but on-brand.

Her obsession with the anime has been well-documented, and Grimes scholars already knew she was captivated by Shinigami, the supernatural spirits that invite humans toward death in Japanese culture. “I got Shinigami eyes. It cost me half my life span but now I can see the true name of everyone and when they will die,” she tweeted in 2019. “Only the real will ones will understand.”

“100 Percent Tragedy” is about defeating Azealia Banks

Grimes and Banks are both groundbreaking artists in their own right, and in some alternate universe, they did collaborate to create a paradigm-shifting song. Sadly, on this plane of existence, plans for a collaboration quickly unraveled in 2018 after Banks flew to Los Angeles to ostensibly record, but spent the weekend waiting for Grimes in Elon Musk’s home. Then came the text message argument screenshots, which included haunting disses about how Grimes smells “like a roll of nickels” and how Banks is a buffet’s biggest fear. The beef, which is now legendary, for better or for worse, even escalated out of the music sphere and into lawsuit involving Tesla. After teasing “100 Percent Tragedy,” Grimes wrote in her Discord chat that that song “is about having to defeat azealia banks when she tried to destroy my life.”

Banks initially wasn’t down with the backstory to “100 Percent Tragedy,” but since Grimes and longtime boyfriend, Elon Musk, announced their split on September 24, the hope for a collaboration has been renewed. “Okay girl, can we finally make those darn songs now that apartheid Clyde is out of the way?” Banks wrote on her Instagram story. “We were really supposed to eat these bitches up.” The butterfly effect of these songs could lead to so much peace, prosperity, and abundance. Think about it…

Grimes & Elon Musk Break Up After Three Years Together: ‘We Are Semi-Separated But Still Love Each Other’

]

Grimes and Elon Musk have ended their relationship after three years together. The SpaceX and Tesla founder confirmed their split in a statement to Page Six on Friday (Sept. 24), and shared how they’re planning to parent their 1-year-old son, X Æ A-12.

“We are semi-separated but still love each other, see each other frequently and are on great terms,” Musk told the outlet. “It’s mostly that my work at SpaceX and Tesla requires me to be primarily in Texas or traveling overseas, and her work is primarily in L.A. She’s staying with me now and Baby X is in the adjacent room.”

Billboard has reached out to Grimes for comment.

Elon Musk And Grimes Have Split After Dating for Three Years

]

Billionaire and SpaceX founder Elon Musk surprised people when he and eclectic singer Grimes revealed they were dating. The pair were together from 2018-2021 and caused major drama with singer Azealia Banks . After their recent split , many people have wondered: were Grimes and Elon ever married?

So, did Grimes and Elon Musk ever get married?

Elon has been married multiple times. First, he was married to Canadian author Justine Wilson from 2000-2008. The couple split in a reportedly messy divorce following the death of their son, Nevada, due to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The pair have five sons and no longer speak.

Elon’s second marriage was to actress Talulah Riley, whom fans would recognize from Pride and Prejudice, St. Trinian’s, and Westworld. Their relationship was also tumultuous, and shortly after Talulah and Elon married in 2010, they filed for divorce … only to once again marry and divorce in 2013 and 2014. The pair are reportedly on good terms.

Before Grimes (whose birth name is Claire Boucher) came along, Elon dated actresses Cameron Diaz and Amber Heard. While Grimes and Elon were together for nearly three years, the couple never got married during that time. Back in 2012, Elon told Forbes that he was hesitant to marry again.

“I think it would be extremely unwise for me to jump into a third marriage without spending considerable time figuring out if the third one will work. It was never my intention to have a short marriage,” he said. “Essentially, I’d want to be super sure before getting married again, but I certainly would love to be in a relationship, for sure.”

Elon’s interview with Forbes might have been too soon, and he would shortly after remarry (and divorce again) Talulah. Grimes told Rolling Stone that being pregnant was an experience that reaffirmed her commitment to the Tesla founder.

“For a girl, it’s sacrificing your body and your freedom. It’s a pretty crazy sacrifice, and only half of the population has to do it. It was profound to me when I decided I was going to do it. I’m just like, I have sacrificed my power in this moment. I have capitulated, and I have spent my whole life avoiding that situation. I have never capitulated to anything, so it was just a profound commitment,” Grimes explained.

Sadly, it appears that the couple has broken up, as first revealed by Page Six on Sept. 24, 2021. Elon told Page Six that he and Grimes are “semi-separated” but remain on good terms and will continue to co-parent their son. The pair also appear to be living together, and Elon cites their travel for work as a reason for the separation.

Nick Lachey ‘never felt older’ than when working with Grimes on ‘Alter Ego’

Nick Lachey didn’t know what to expect when he said yes to working with Grimes on Fox’s new singing competition series, “Alter Ego.”

The 98 Degrees singer, 47, told Page Six in an exclusive interview that serving as a judge alongside the experimental pop star, 33 — who embraces an otherworldly persona, avant-garde fashions and a futuristic sound — was an interesting experience.

“I’ve never felt older in my life than sitting next to Grimes on a judging panel,” Lachey said with a laugh, “because the way her mind operates and the things that she understands, I don’t even begin to grasp how those things are working.”

The boy band icon and Grimes — who shares 16-month-old son X Æ A-Xii with tech billionaire Elon Musk — are joined on the panel by rock pioneer Alanis Morissette and Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am.

The eclectic foursome has been asked to do something never seen before on reality TV: judge contestants who are actually performing backstage in motion capture suits as their over-the-top avatars appear on a screen.

Alanis Morissette, will.i.am, Grimes and Nick Lachey serve as judges on “Alter Ego.”

“What I think is really cool about our judging panel is we are all so different. We come from different backgrounds,” Lachey noted. “Will is also very into tech. I think Alanis and I are a little bit more of your kind of straight-ahead, not-really-understanding-what’s-going-on type performers.

“But I think what I do understand and really recognize is true talent — and that’s what cuts through in the performances.”

Asked how “Alter Ego” stacks up to such staples as “American Idol” and “The Voice,” Lachey emphasized its “radical” concept and the talent of the competitors hidden behind computer-generated characters.

“These singers are badass. That’s all I’m going to say. And they’re dealing with kind of never-seen-before conditions … They’re backstage in a vocal booth while their ‘alter ego’ is performing. It’s definitely uncharted waters as far as a singing competition show goes,” he said.

“The technology is incredible. People are going to be blown away by it. But behind that is a real soul — a real, heartfelt, emotional soul to these performances.”

If the show produces a superstar, which Lachey anticipates, he explained that they will enter the industry as their chosen “alter ego” rather than reveal their true identity.

Lachey is looking for the “next-generation superstar” as a judge on “Alter Ego.”

“Maybe they have stage fright or anxiety. Maybe they have an issue with their self-image or their self-worth and this is a way for them to kind of hide behind something,” he said. “Every story’s different, every journey’s different.”

Lachey added, “Not that humans on stage are ever going to go away, but I do think that there is room for this next-generation superstar. Whoever comes out of this competition as the champion will have a real opportunity to step into that role and be a kind of a trailblazer as far as that goes moving forward.”

“Alter Ego” airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Fox.
